The incident of the Nanfang' ao Bridge falling down at 9:30 a.m. on October 1, 2019 resulted in 2 serious injuries, 11 slight injuries, and 6 deaths. The image of the bridge collapsed at that time is still branded on many engineers’ memories. The cause of the collapse was due to broken suspension cables which was analyzed and determined by the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board. The relevant personnel were prosecuted by prosecutors. However, the collapse of the bridge at that time was like a large-scale destruction test. In addition to the broken suspension cables, the original construction issues can also be seen through the observations of fragments of the wreckages.
By examining the damages of the bridge, we can also find out many issues that have nothing to do with collapses but are worthy of consideration from the aspects of designs, manufacturing, supervise works to maintenances. These observations should be shared with more engineers, we specially invited Engineer Li Chia-Shun from the Highway Bureau and Professor Yang Kuo-Chen from the Department of Construction Engineering of National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology to share their opinions.
Engineer Mr. Li shared with everyone his long-time on-site observations and problems of construction from the first-person point of view; Professor Mr. Yang analyzed the joint forms and mechanical behavior from theoretical perspectives through interspersed dialogue.
Finally, Chuang Shih-Cheng, the executive director of the Taiwan Welding Society, analyzed and explained the principles of common questions in welding. Hopefully everyone can learn the correct knowledge from the costly mistake and together improve the industry level.
